Whether you’re a complete beginner looking to start playing tennis socially, a seasoned player seeking the challenge of competitions, or somewhere in between, our members enjoy exclusive use of nine beautifully maintained tennis courts, six of which are indoors and housed in our stunning new tennis dome. Whatever your skill level, tennis is available all year round at The Essex.
More Ways to Play
Members can practice their game whatever the weather, with our heated tennis dome. This is the same as the dome used by the All England Club, and covers three Acrylic indoor courts to ensure year-round use. Acrylic hard courts offer a slower speed and higher bounce. An additional three indoor courts have a Playrite Foundation Carpet surface with a medium speed and bounce which is extremely kind on the joints. There are also three outside Macadam courts which are extremely popular during the summer months.

Open to all ages, whether you're picking up a racket for the first time or you're already a padel enthusiast, our new indoor courts provide the perfect environment to play, whatever the weather — and it’s all included in your membership.

Join our community
When you join The Essex, you’ll be joining a friendly community of like-minded tennis players. Our regular Club night takes place every Tuesday, as well as a Club Morning every Wednesday.These are always well attended with anywhere between 15 and 45 members coming along to meet other players and enjoy some friendly games in a relaxed environment. Our coaches are always on hand to arrange the matchesand ensure everyone gets a game.
Social and competitive tennis
The Essex has a very active tennis section with over 20 teams in the Colchester, Halstead and Essex LTA leagues. Members are also welcome to get involved in the club morning or night, Internal Singles and Doubles leagues, Club Tournaments or simply have a friendly knock about.
For those wishing to improve their game, our team of LTA qualified coaches offer individual and group sessions for all ages, from young mini tennis players through to adult players of all standards.
